Telecom26 and VMS enhance maritime connectivity for commercial vessels

22 April 2024

Telecom26 is both a maritime MNO and a full global MVNO for terrestrial coverage.

Providing maritime connectivity for leisure yachts, fishing boats, container ships, ferries and other vessels - and the devices, crew and passengers on-board - is one of Telecom26’s core competencies.

We also provide connectivity to inland ports and rivers as shipping companies usually need connectivity on-land as well as at sea to monitor their freight as it moves out of and into a port.

We recently partnered with Virtual Maritime Services (VMS) to vastly improve the coverage that it provides to its maritime customers. In an increasingly connected world, fast and reliable communications are vital in ensuring the efficiency and safety of maritime operations. However, many shipping companies (that aren’t using Telecom26’s service) experience limited coverage, high costs and poor connectivity when their vessels are at sea.

Feedback about the new service from VMS’ maritime customers has been extremely positive, highlighting the reliability, cost-effectiveness, and innovative features of the solutions provided by Telecom26 and VMS. VMS’ maritime customers now benefit from the following:

  • Expanded Coverage and global connectivity over Telecom26’s network which utilities the networks of 650+ mobile operators across more than 200 countries and territories
  • Full Satellite Integration to ensure uninterrupted connectivity
  • Data pooling, ensuring efficient use of budget and resources
  • Easy to Install Telecom26 Global SIM cards which can be used by all types of devices including routers
  • Cost-Effective Plans: Telecom26 has developed customised pricing plans to suit all budgets

But you don’t need to take our word for it! Here’s what Nikolaos Nikolinakos, MD of VMS, had to say”

“..the Telecom26 service works perfectly. They can provide coverage in practically all regions. The connectivity service is reliable and provides data pooling. A vessel or maritime company can activate the service for ex 50GB/100GB and can share across their entire fleet” and

“The excellent customer support, flexibility to set-up packages to suit different needs and requests - and the simplicity of the Telecom26 B2B management portal - all this was difficult to find in one single provider”.

Meanwhile Nikolaos Michopoulos, Senior Network Sales Engineer at VMS commented:

“If someone goes to India with only a local provider SIM Card it can connect only with that local provider in India. But with the Telecom26 Global SIM Card it can also connect to other Indian local providers. Telecom26 is reliable and efficient. It guarantees global coverage even in the most challenging regions and covers practically all regions with only one SIM Card”.

Earlier this month we announced another partnership this time with MiWire which will bring fast and reliable data at a reduced price for commercial vessels — particularly ferries — that often sail on the same routes.

This new maritime service, based on eSIM, will always use the most cost-effective and strongest cellular connection for data which can take advantage of local rates. Many land-based cellular networks can reach up to 50km out to sea so there is no need for vessels to use satellite when they could be using less expensive cellular instead. You can read more about this in a previous blog Telecom26 and MiWire trial new eSIM-enabled maritime connectivity service for vessels of all sizes.
