COP27: Maritime connectivity is an essential tool in tackling the huge carbon footprints of the global shipping industry

This time last year our maritime connectivity team wrote about COP, Climate Change and the role of IoT Connectivity as the world’s leaders gathered at COP26.  This week COP27 is in the news again with more urgency this time as our world continues to warm.

The impact of international shipping on the environment is something our maritime connectivity team is helping to address. The industry is a large and growing source of greenhouse gas emissions emitting around 940 million tonnes of CO2 annually and responsible for about 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

According to this articleIf the shipping industry were a country, it would be ranked between Germany and Japan as the sixth-largest contributor to global CO2 emissions”.

Consequently, there are all kinds of initiatives in the industry to reduce emissions with The International Maritime Organisation aiming to reduce CO2 emissions from international shipping by at least 40% by 2030.

The Vessel Performance Optimisation website recently ran an interesting piece about how two ship operators are using machine learning and AI data gathering and analytics tools to measure – and reduce -  the amount of CO2 emitted by their 19 tankers.

To summarise, if the data shows that emissions have risen above the regulated level then immediate on-board adjustments can be made such as reducing speed and hull cleaning.

And, of course, always-on connectivity is needed on these tankers to ensure that data is collected and analysed in real-time. And that’s where Telecom26 fits in…
